Tranche 3 Redundancy
. In total 116 1 RGR Soldiers were made re-
dundant in the first two tranches. Numbers in the latest tranche (52)
were in line with expectations due to the operational exclusion. Those
1 RGR personnel selected in Tranche 3 will not deploy to Brunei but
instead will remain in Kent or at their respective ERE locations
until
their departure.
Successes/Achievements
a. 1 RGR has enjoyed a very positive sporting year. Highlights in-
clude winning the Army Volleyball Championships, Army level
Taekwondo representation and fourth place at Bisley 2012, despite the
deployment to Afghanistan. To top it all, Lance Corporal Netra Rana
competed for Team GB at the London 2012 Paralympics in the Sitting
Volleyball as the team’s
libero
, the star defensive player.
b. This year has also seen the first RGR Colour Sergeant selected as
an instructor at RMAS; CSgt Jiwan Gurung will start in September 2013
having passed the demanding Cadre in June 2013. 1 RGR has also sent
the first RGR Soldier entrant to the Commissioning Course following
in the footsteps of Lt Col Bijaykumar Rawat (ex-2GR) who was com-
missioned nearly 30 years ago. OCdt Subas Gurung (ex B Company 1
RGR) is in his second term and progressing well thus far.

Summary
. Over the past year 2RGR has focussed upon its role and
position within Brunei and the wider region. With 2011 dominated by
our deployment to Afghanistan, the past 18 months have been about a
return to jungle soldiering; re-honing collective skills, reinvigorating
relationships with our Bruneian partners and reinforcing the role of the
resident Gurkha Battalion in the post-Herrick era.
The SE Asian environment offers challenging, diverse and attractive
